Friend --
When I decided to run for City Council in 2013, I was a longshot candidate. I was taking on the Chair of the Brooklyn Democratic Party and a (disgraced) former Assemblyman who had ruled North Brooklyn with an iron fist for years. It was hard to get taken seriously -- until La Luchardora stepped in.
Nydia supported me because she saw what I saw: an opportunity to give the people of Williamsburg, Bushwick, and Ridgewood a public servant who would put their best interest first no matter the politics. We proudly stood together as progressive voices advocating for a better future. It didn't matter how powerful my opponents were -- Nydia was going to stick her neck out and fight like hell for the best interest of the communities she loves and represents.
She didn't think twice about it because this wasn't new to her. When she first ran for Congress, she challenged the political establishment for the sake of working families by primarying an incumbent with millions of dollars in the bank, the tabloids and special interests on his side, and no qualms about slinging mud her way. And while a woman of color beating a long-time Congressmember may seem like a familiar story now, it wasn't when Nydia knocked on thousands of doors on her way to writing it -- and winning -- in 1992.
Ever since she was elected, Nydia has had two goals: serving the working families of her district and supporting others -- like me -- who will serve them as well. I'm asking you to join me today in showing Nydia that we have her back, just like she's had the backs of progressive candidates from every corner of the City. Are you in? [[link removed]]
When I say she’s on my team, I mean it. Nydia endorsed progressives across the City, and the vast majority of her candidates won. She hit the campaign trail with gusto; anyone who has ever campaigned with La Luchardora knows that no voter walks past her without hearing her talk about why their vote matters and what's at stake. She isn't building a machine, but she is the matriarch of our movement.
Nydia is the kind of leader who fosters inspiration -- she taught me to believe I could make real change for my community. I’m so proud to work alongside her and so honored to have her support.
The June primary was a huge win for our movement -- and Nydia played a massive role in it. Please chip in $20.21 right now to thank her for all she has already done in 2021 -- and all she'll continue to do. [[link removed]]
