Cori, Quite Contrary
by Anne Schlafly Cori, Chairman, Eagle Forum

When you share a name with a famous person, it can be amusing — until you discover that you strongly disagree with your doppelganger.

Dr. Anne Cori is an epidemiologist at Imperial College London, who specializes in forecasting hospitalizations and deaths from infectious diseases. She has been in the news recently forecasting massive hospitalizations and deaths when Britain implements "Freedom Day" on July 19 and relaxes their draconian shutdown rules. Dr. Cori said, "In all the scenarios that we looked at, delaying the easing of restrictions by a few weeks would reduce the size of the wave and result in fewer deaths."

No, this Anne Cori is not an epidemiologist, but I do know that we should never, ever repeat the misery and suffering of the government-enforced shutdowns of last year.

Here is why government-enforced shutdowns are bad public policy:
1. Shutdowns did not and will not prevent infectious diseases from spreading. Covid-19 infections spiked in spite of widespread government-enforced shutdowns. The vulnerable can be protected without the mass incarceration of healthy people.
2. Shutdowns have a terrible public health consequence. There is a reason why solitary confinement is the worst punishment: isolation has deleterious effects on humans by increasing deaths from other causes, especially suicide and drug and alcohol abuse. Nearly 100,000 Americans died by overdosing on drugs in 2020, which was a 30 percent increase over 2019.
3. Shutdowns divided people into two camps: essential and non-essential workers. Governments arbitrarily determined that some work is "non-essential" and forcibly prevented legitimate businesses from operating. No bureaucrat should ever have the power to cancel a worker. Livelihoods are lives, so hairdressers, tailors, hygienists, and other service providers are essential because their work is essential to their customers.
4. The shutdown was the purposeful destruction of small and family businesses, while most big businesses were deemed "essential". Amazon boomed last year while countless mom-and-pop stores went bust. Small clothing retailers were forced to close while "essential" Walmart could continue to sell clothes.
5. The shutdown of in-person schooling caused the loss of a year of learning. Many children, especially the at-risk and low-income children, will never be able to catch up that wasted year.
6. During the 2020 shutdown, the goalposts kept getting moved as two weeks became two months and then longer before reopening. As a result, no one could make any plans. This permanent indefinite state caused mental anguish for families and prevented business from making any plans. As a result, millions of Americans lost their jobs because the government would not adhere to a reopening date.

I am so grateful that Americans declared their independence from England so we don't have to rely on British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's capricious choice of July 19 as "Freedom Day". Johnson actually said that he would re-institute lockdowns if Britons had the audacity to abuse their new freedoms! That government is not "of the people, by the people, or for the people".

Shutdowns are not about public health or safety; shutdowns are about government control of the individual. In my hometown, our power-mad elected leader has just arbitrarily announced a new mandate of mask-wearing for all. No legislature or council participated in this edict. Absolute power does corrupt absolutely.
