John,

With the Census Bureau's apportionment numbers due out in just three weeks, I'm excited to share our strategy to prevent Republican gerrymandering in this redistricting year. This is going to be a longer email, so if you don't have time to read the whole thing but want to support our work, you can do that here.

The first thing you need to know is that the redistricting process has begun and there's no time to waste. In states from Georgia to Colorado to Arizona, legislators and independent redistricting commissions are holding hearings. That said, the release of the final census data on August 16 will mark the beginning of the most important phase of our work.

Republicans have been very open about their goal for 2021 redistricting: They intend to “secure a decade of [conservative] power,” according to the president of the Republican State Leadership Committee. They plan to pack and crack communities of color into Republican-leaning districts and limit Democratic representation to urban centers, all so they can “win” majorities in the U.S. House and state legislatures.

They're also going into this process with a fair amount of hubris. They don't think anyone will be able to stop them from manipulating the maps. But I know we can do it with you on our side, John!

Here’s our strategy:

First, we’re engaging the American people in the redistricting process to force transparency and secure truly representative maps.

Second, we're staffing up with experts who will be able to analyze proposed maps and tell us in short order if it's fair or rigged.

Third, where necessary, the NDRC will support plaintiffs in lawsuits to protect states’ redistricting processes from manipulation and fight for fair results.

And finally, we’re making sure Republicans know they will be held accountable for their actions during redistricting in the 2022 elections.

Is it a lot of work? Definitely. But this is the moment we were made for.

So if you believe in the work we're doing to restore our democracy and make sure everyone has an equal say in the direction of our country, I'm asking you to make a donation to support the NDRC. Will you pitch in right away?
