Friend,
It's no coincidence that after Warnock and Ossoff won both Senate seats in Georgia, the state legislature passed the harshest voter suppression laws since Jim Crow just a few weeks later. And Georgia's not the only state where this is happening -- we've seen hundreds of voter suppression bills pop up all across America since the 2020 elections.
And now that we finally have the majority to pass voting rights legislation -- ensuring Black and Brown voters are no longer suppressed and that voters with disabilities have more access to the ballot box -- Republicans are filibustering all of our progress.
Team, the filibuster should not be part of our democracy -- it is just another way for Republicans to obstruct all progress when they're in the minority.
Raphael Warnock said it best: “Voting rights are bigger than the filibuster. And shame on us if we're more committed to a Senate rule than we are to the principles of democracy.”
It's clear why Republicans want to protect the archaic filibuster: If they make voting accessible to more folks, they will lose. GOP policies are widely unpopular, and so they're making sure only their supporters can vote. It's a desperate attempt to cling to power at the expense of disenfranchising millions of voters.
It needs to stop -- NOW. That is why we are working to elect progressive candidates who will eliminate the filibuster and support legislation that makes voting more accessible -- not less.
