Hey John,

The federal minimum was established to be the minimum amount that a worker could be paid to live above the poverty line. However, that's not how it is anymore. The last time the minimum wage was raised was on this day in 2009.

Since then, the cost of everyday life -- everything from rent to groceries to utilities to gas -- has increased while workers' wages have remained the same. In fact, there isn't a single state where a person working 40 hours a week at minimum wage can afford to cover their rent.
