CNN: "Minimum wage workers can't afford rent anywhere in America"

It's clear the federal minimum wage is not a living wage. Will you join Derek in the fight to raise the minimum wage? Add your name today.

Hello,

Today marks 12 years since the last federal minimum wage increase. In the past 12 years, as the cost of living has gone up and inflation has taken hold, the minimum wage has been stuck at $7.25 per hour. That needs to change.

Recent reporting from CNN proves what we already knew: $7.25 per hour is not a living wage. Nowhere in our country is rent affordable for minimum wage workers -- and that doesn't take into account the cost of groceries, childcare, or other basic necessities.

That's shameful. In the wealthiest country in the world, the lawful minimum wage should cover the cost of housing. And if it doesn't, then raising the minimum wage shouldn't be considered a radical idea -- it's common sense! It's why Derek is an original cosponsor of the Raise the Wage Act which would gradually raise the minimum wage to $15 across the country by 2025.

Derek is fighting for workers’ rights and for an economy that works better for everyone in Congress. If you agree it's past time to raise the minimum wage, add your name next to Derek's on today's anniversary »
