Congresswoman Tenney's Weekly Newsletter Contact Me Protecting Our Second Amendment This fall, the Supreme Court will hear the case, New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. Corlett. New York residents argue they were wrongfully denied a conceal carry permit for personal protection. If the plaintiffs succeed in this case, it could be the most important victory for the Second Amendment since 2008. I led a congressional amicus brief to the Supreme Court in support of this challenge. New York's law that restricts our right to conceal carry for self-protection is unconstitutional. My brief makes clear that law-abiding New Yorkers, and law-abiding Americans, should be allowed to protect themselves and their families. 175 of my colleagues joined me in submitting this brief, including House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy, House Republican Whip Steve Scalise, and House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik. American citizens have a right to keep and bear arms, and I will continue to lead the fight to protect and defend this right for all law-abiding Americans. WATCH: GOP congresswoman urges SCOTUS to overturn NY gun law Supporting the Law Enforcement Community WATCH: Police officers will be risk averse if qualified immunity is eliminated I formally introduced the Local Law Enforcement Protection Act, H.R. 4500, this week. This bill ensures that all states and localities align themselves with the United States Supreme Court decision in Saucier v. Katz, where the Court ruled that a law enforcement officer can only be found liable in civil suits if their conduct violated a clearly established constitutional right. States and cities around the country have started to roll back or remove qualified immunity for law enforcement officers, which is subjecting them to harassment and frivolous lawsuits simply for doing their jobs. My legislation prohibits states that remove these protections for law enforcement from applying for certain federal grants. At a time when police forces are under attack and crime is rising across the nation, I am more committed than ever to ensuring that law enforcement officers have the tools to continue protecting our communities. Election Integrity Caucus Roundtable on State Election Reforms WATCH: Claudia Joins Sean Spicer to Discuss Election Integrity I hosted the third virtual roundtable for the Election Integrity Caucus this week. We had an excellent panel of knowledgeable state legislators, who are working to defend election integrity in their states. This includes Representative Blake Miguez of Louisiana, who introduced HB 20, a bill to ban Zuckerbucks from Louisiana's elections. We also heard from Representative Briscoe Cain of Texas, who Chairs the Texas House Committee on Elections. Rep. Cain is working to drive commonsense election reforms that make it easier to vote and harder to cheat. We were also joined by Representative Seth Grove of Pennsylvania, who is the Chair of the Pennsylvania House State Government Committee and sponsor of HB 1300, the Voting Rights Protection Act. One of the guiding principles of the Election Integrity Caucus is that the administration of elections should be the role and responsibility of states. The Cuban People Need America's Support, Not Empty Gestures from the Biden Administration OP-ED: National Interest: Congresswoman Tenney: The Cuban People Need America's Support, Not Empty Gestures We must stand united against authoritarian regimes and support those who are demanding freedom, like the brave Cuban people. This week, I joined nearly 200 Members of Congress to introduce a resolution outlining the historical failures and greatest crimes of socialism. This very way of thinking goes against our founding principles and core beliefs, which is why our resolution denounces socialism and makes our opposition to such misguided policies abundantly clear. I also published an op-ed in the National Interest that shares my candid thoughts on the Biden Administration's weak and haphazard approach to addressing the situation in Cuba. The Cuban people need America’s support, not empty gestures. When it comes to the noble fight for freedom against repression, the United States must always be on the side of freedom. Just the News: 'Very weak' Biden was 'very slow out of the box' on Cuban freedom movement My Thoughts on Our Nation's Cyber Security This week I joined Mornings with Maria on Fox Business to discuss the recent cyber attacks on our nation. One of the largest cyber attacks ever was exposed this week and the Chinese Communist Party is responsible. It's clear that there is much more that needs to be done to protect our nation’s cyber security. I'm calling on the Biden Administration to articulate a clear strategy for how we can move forward that includes a robust response to deter our adversaries. My Votes This Week I'm committed to restoring transparency to government, which is why I explain every vote I take on the House floor. While we may not always agree, you will always know where I stand on the issues and how I vote in Congress. To read more about my votes, please click here. H.R. 2467 PFAS Action Act of 2021: I voted “Yes” on H.R.2467, the PFAS Action Act of 2021. Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large class of man-made chemicals that are very persistent in the environment—meaning they can often last for decades. Some of these substances can accumulate in the body over time and cause adverse health effects such as thyroid disorders and cancer. This bill will require the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to designate the dangerous, already commercially phased-out, PFOA and PFOS chemicals as hazardous substances, making areas with high contamination a priority for clean-up under the EPA’s Superfund program. This legislation passed the House by a vote of 241-183. I voted “Yes” on a package of 12 bipartisan bills, which passed by a bipartisan vote of 319-105. This package includes legislation that will strengthen our transportation network’s response to future and current health crises. This legislation will also strengthen our nation’s response to cyberattacks, securing our essential infrastructure and government services from attacks by criminals or adversaries like Russia and China. H.R. 2668: Consumer Protection and Recovery Act: I voted “No” on H.R.2668, the Consumer Protection and Recovery Act. This bill radically expands the power of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), while failing to take the necessary steps to establish a national privacy framework or maintain sufficient administrative guardrails and oversight measures. This legislation passed the House by a vote of 221-205. H.R. 826: Divided Families Reunification Act: I voted “Yes” on H.R. 826, the Divided Families Reunification Act. This legislation will allow the State Department to work with the South Korean government on opportunities to reunite Korean Americans with their family members in North Korea. H.R. 3985: The Allies Act: I voted “Yes” on H.R. 3985, the Allies Act. This bill ensures that Afghan interpreters and other allies who faithfully supported the U.S mission in Afghanistan are not left behind, while providing Congress with the necessary tools and authorities to conduct oversight of the program as needed. Supporting Our Local Communities: CSBG Community Service Block Grants (CSBG) are so vital to providing communities the resources they need to address poverty and expand opportunities for children and families. This week, I expressed my support for these bipartisan and highly successful grants in a speech on the House Floor. I joined other members from both sides of the aisle to express a need for greater funding for this program. This will help groups in our region like the Mowhawk Valley Community Action Agency, which serves the Oneida, Madison, and Herkimer Counties in education, employment and family needs. Gov. Cuomo Undermines Election Integrity Do the signatures above match? This week, Governor Cuomo quietly signed into law several disastrous policies that undermine the integrity of our elections. One example is that he's chosen to eliminate the requirement to match signatures of absentee ballots for New Yorkers. The image you see above is a real signature that was deemed illegal in my race for Congress because it clearly does not match or even look remotely close to the same name. Cuomo's decision to do away with signature matching or verification requirements for absentee ballots opens the door for fraud in our elections. Binghamton Airport Awarded New Grant I was honored to announce this week that the Greater Binghamton Airport is the recipient of a $1 million grant from the Department of Transportation. Back in March, I wrote the Secretary of Transportation asking him to approve these funds for the community. This grant will help the Binghamton Airport provide new flights into and out of the region, which will fuel our economy and boost tourism across the Southern Tier. I look forward to working with the Greater Binghamton Airport, Broome County, and others across the Southern Tier to build on this momentum and continue expanding opportunity here at home. The DOJ's Shameful Decision to Not Investigate Nursing Home Deaths in New York Read my full letter demanding justice for New Yorkers here. The civil rights of seniors and those living in long-term care facilities were violated by Governor Andrew Cuomo's negligent policies. President Biden's Department of Justice was investigating the thousands of deaths in New York and several other states. However, the DOJ just announced that they now have no plans to pursue these investigations any further. The DOJ has an obligation to fully investigate this matter and issue findings to the American people. We cannot turn a blind eye to this injustice. I have sent a letter to the Attorney General demanding answers - the families who have suffered and continue to grieve deserve justice. I'm going to keep fighting for it.
