Hey John,

Do you know what the federal minimum wage was in 2009? What about the federal minimum wage today? It's a trick question: they're the same!

In 2009, the federal minimum wage was $7.25 and 12 years later it's still $7.25. That's because Washington gridlock has left working people behind.

John, I believe it's past time Congress raised the federal minimum wage to $15/hr. But I want to hear what you think. Take our 2-minute questionnaire and let me know where you stand.

In high school, I took jobs at McDonalds, Macy's, and housekeeping at the local Inn. In college and grad school, I worked waitressing and bartending jobs, first to get me through school and later to provide for my daughter Karina.

I may be a legislator now, but I know what it's like to hustle and live in fear of not being able to pay the bills. I know how brutal and anxiety-inducing it can be.

I've been there and I want to do everything I can to make sure no one has to spend sleepless nights wondering how they will provide for their family.

Let me know what you think: Take our quick questionnaire now.

In New York, workers successfully organized to win a state minimum wage increase -- on Long Island, the state minimum wage will cap at $15/hr this December. The increase provides Long Islanders with more opportunities to participate in our economy, afford housing, and provide for their families.

But for folks outside of Long Island, wages remain inadequate. Far too many workers are forced to work unsustainable overtime -- if they're lucky enough to get it -- or find a second job.

The bottom line is 12 years is way too long for the federal minimum wage to stay flat. We are simply calling for a fair, liveable wage for an honest day's work.

Thanks for taking the time to hear from me,

Kara Hahn
