Chairman's Update

This is a weekly update from the Republican Party of Pennsylvania Chairman
Lawrence Tabas filling you in on what our statewide party leaders are up to,
along with relevant news pertaining to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

July 24th, 2021

Chairman's Message

Fellow Pennsylvanians,

This week, our party continued the fight to restore integrity to
Pennsylvania’s elections. On Wednesday, our Republican Representatives
announced that they plan to reintroduce election security legislation that
includes important measures like voter ID. Contrary to the Left’s baseless
talking points, requiring a photo ID to vote is an important security measure
that helps to secure the right to vote, not undermine it. Polls have revealed
that 74% of Pennsylvanians support a photo ID requirement for voting, and that
an overwhelming majority support enhanced election security measures. Our party
is going to keep fighting to overcome the Wolf Administration's scare tactics
and successfully implement voter ID in our state, either through the
legislature or through a constitutional amendment.

Sincerely,

Lawrence J. Tabas
Chairman, Republican Party of Pennsylvania

Pa. Republicans are bringing their election bill back after Gov. Tom Wolf said
he’s open to voter ID changes
July 21, 2021 | Witf

Pennsylvania Republicans have announced that they plan to reintroduce their
election security legislation after Governor Wolf changed his position on voter
ID. It is still unclear if the Wolf Administration is willing to negotiate a
new election security bill with Republican legislators, but Wolf’s announcement
sets the stage for the issue to be front and center when the legislature
returns in the fall.

Pa. requested $340 million in emergency contracts in 2020 with little oversight
July 19, 2021 | Spotlight PA

This week, state lawmakers will probe whether state agencies had too much
leeway in securing emergency contracts during the pandemic. The scrutiny comes
after one of the vendors the Wolf Administration hired to administer the
state’s contact tracing system, Insight Global, was responsible for a
devastating data breach that exposed the private medical information of
thousands of Pennsylvanians. Republican lawmakers have repeatedly expressed
concern about the lack of transparency in the emergency contact purchasing
process. Governor Wolf, meanwhile, has continued to claim the process is
“thorough, comprehensive, and transparent” without elaborating on what specific
checks are in place to make sure purchases are vetted thoroughly.

Fraud continues to plague Pa.’s unemployment claims system
July 19, 2021 | PennLive

With more employers looking to hire, unemployment numbers are trending
downwards in Pennsylvania. Yet, despite this downward trend, there has been an
uptick in unemployment benefit claims. According to state officials, this
signals a rise in fraudulent claims. To combat the rising fraud, labor
officials are rolling out new measures, including increased identity
verification steps through the vendor ID.me. Pennsylvania has struggled with an
increase in fraudulent unemployment claims since it switched to a new online
filing system last month.
