July 24th, 2021 John, During my time in Congress, one of my proudest moments occurred in 2010 when we enacted into law the Affordable Care Act, which expanded health coverage for over 20 million Americans, abolished pre-existing exclusions, lifetime limits, and extended age 26 family coverage for adult children. Since then, I’ve successfully worked to protect that historic law from republican repeal efforts and focused on enacting improvements to the law, lowering costs and expanding access to high-quality, affordable care.
This year, the American Rescue Plan, that I helped craft and vote for, which President Biden signed into law on March 11- without a single republican vote, by the way - included massive, eye watering improvements to the ACA. The Rescue Plan boosted ACA subsidies to existing participants and new enrollees, which significantly lower out of pocket costs for plans offered through the ACA.
In Connecticut alone, the ACA health exchange projects $85 million in new savings for families presently enrolled their system. as new enrollees sign up, this number will grow even larger.
President Biden and Congressional democrats are not stopping there. Next up, we are crafting President Biden’s new American family plan aimed at helping families recover and rebuild from the pandemic. Recently, I joined my colleague, Washington state democrat, Pramila Jayapal and over 150 others from across the House Democratic caucus to publicly insist that the family plan modify Medicare to lowering the age of eligibility, and add long overdue dental, vision and hearing benefits, and cut drug prices by instituting price negotiation.
There’s still a lot more work ahead to getting this done. You and I both know how central affordable and reliable health care is to the economic well-being of individuals, families and small businesses across Eastern Connecticut. That’s why I’ll keep working to build on the aca and make the progress we need for so many in our region.
