Hi John, Mariam's morning routine might sound familiar. When she wakes up, she spends a few peaceful moments on the rooftop patio of her home, basking in the early stirring of the city. She makes herself coffee, waters the plants and gathers what she needs for the drive to work.
The water cooler chat in the Save the Children Yemen HQ, though, includes last night's air strikes and where to find the latest black market gasoline. Mariam and her colleagues hop on Zoom where, internet access allowing, they meet with field teams all over the country to strategize ways to save children from hunger, violence and illness.
"An estimated 2.3 million children under five in Yemen are expected to go hungry or be on the brink of starvation by the end of this year," Mariam told us. "That's half of all children in that age bracket."
The team faces immense challenges. More than 10 million Yemeni children overall are going hungry because of ongoing conflict, the global pandemic and climate change.
But my colleagues in Yemen are relentless.

Miriam and her team are the single largest group of aid workers in Yemen right now, and I'm so proud to call her my colleague. She and so many others spend their days on the front lines of the hunger crisis, making sure children all over the world have access to the vital nutrition they need to grow up strong.
With your help, our team in Yemen has been able to make a dent in Yemen's hunger crisis. They have provided 100,000 families with consistent food support and feed more than 270,000 children.
Mariam and her colleagues run on stories of growth and change. Each young life they get to save sends them scrambling to reach the next hungry child.
"Yemeni humanitarian aid workers are always challenged, but they never give up and they find a way to deliver support," Mariam said. "I am proud to be one of them.'
I know that each life Mariam saves matters. I can't wait to see how those kids grow up to make the world a better place, just like Mariam does.
Thank you, Cassidy Knize Digital
