Corporate courts are in the UK-Canada deal and we have just a few months to get corporate courts dropped. What happens in this deal could set the UK’s direction on corporate courts for the future.
To know what we’re up against we only need to look to the Netherlands. Multinationals Uniper and RWE are both suing the Dutch government for passing a law phasing out coal to help tackle the climate crisis. We already know RWE wants €1.4bn. As public pressure builds in the UK to block new coal mines and airport expansion, new trade deals could hand corporations the chance to demand billions here as well.

In June we had the good news that corporate courts had been dropped from the UK-Australia deal, something Global Justice Now supporters like you helped to make happen.
South Africa, India, Tanzania, Indonesia and New Zealand have all taken steps to review, limit or terminate existing corporate court deals and refuse to sign new ones.

Corporate courts are an obstacle to a clean energy transition and climate justice. From lobby meetings to mobilising for the COP26 climate talks, we are ready to boost our campaigning tactics to make sure the UK rejects corporate courts. But we need funds to do this. Corporate courts are a global issue that requires a global response. That’s why we will continue our work to reject corporate courts altogether working with allies across the world beyond the imminent UK deals. As part of this work, we are mobilising people to attend the COP26 climate talks to raise awareness of how corporate courts are fuelling the climate crisis.
Corporate courts make climate action harder, slower and more expensive at a point when we are already running out of time. And in some cases action will be blocked – countries will do less or they will not take action at all because of the threat of being sued for billions of pounds by big business.
The first step towards meaningful climate action and climate justice is to reject corporate courts from the new UK-Canada deal. But we need everyone on board this campaign to succeed. If you are able to, please consider donating today.
