If there's one thing the GOP has been consistent about over the last decade, it is attacking DREAMers. Ever since President Obama created the DACA program in 2012 to protect immigrants who were brought to our country as undocumented children, it's been a target of cruel, xenophobic outrage from the far-right.
Donald Trump campaigned on ending DACA and deporting every DREAMer in the country. He failed -- but now a federal judge in Texas is trying to do his dirty work for him.
According to reports from NBC News, this judge “declared illegal the federal program that has allowed nearly 800,000 young people brought to the United States illegally as children to avoid deportation and remain in the country.”
Let's be clear: DREAMers are essential workers and health care providers. They are our neighbors, friends, and co-workers. They are hard-working Americans who contribute millions in federal taxes every year. It's far past time that DREAMers feel safe in this country that is their home.
President Biden responded, emphasizing that this new ruling cannot go unanswered. “I have repeatedly called on Congress to pass the American Dream and Promise Act, and I now renew that call with the greatest urgency,” he said. We couldn't agree more -- Congress MUST ACT.
The GOP has spent the past four years attacking DREAMers, terrorizing immigrant communities, and turning Americans on each other. We need to make it clear that we're moving our country forward, and EVERYONE deserves a seat at the table.
