Hi there —
Last week was San Diego Pride, and each year, I am excited to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community and their progress as we continue to fight for the advancement of LGBTQ+ protections.
This year, I was thrilled to attend a reception ahead of the Spirit of Stonewall Rally. I enjoyed gathering with San Diego’s LGBTQ+ community after a year of separation to celebrate the progress made toward full equality.
From the beginning of my career in public service, I have made a commitment to the LGBTQ+ community, and I’ve never wavered in that commitment. As San Diego City Council President, I worked to oppose Prop. 8 here in California and I delivered an amicus brief to the Supreme Court against the horribly bigoted Defense of Marriage Act.
During my time in Congress, I passed legislation that would outlaw LGBTQ+ discrimination in the federal workplace, and helped lead the charge for the Equality Act, a law that would provide explicit protections against discrimination based on an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity.
But our work doesn’t stop there.
We must continue to fight for every American’s right to love who they love, marry who they choose, and identify and express themselves authentically. That’s why today, I’m reaffirming my commitment to LGBTQ+ rights. We will not stop until every American has equal protection under the law.
If you’re with me, add your name to stand for LGBTQ+ equality now →
Happy Pride, San Diego. Always celebrate responsibly, and remember to continue the fight for equality for all.
With gratitude,
Scott
