This Week:

* CfA Requests SEC Investigation into Undisclosed Histories of Deep Sea Mining Companies Seeking Merger: On Thursday, CfA asked the Security and Exchanges Commission to investigate the proposed Special Purpose Acquisition Company (SPAC) transaction between DeepGreen Metals Inc. and Sustainable Opportunities Acquisition Corp (SOAC), alleging that required disclosures are inadequate. The filers appear to have failed to disclose material information regarding the backgrounds and litigation histories of key officers and directors.

+ “Omitting even one questionable past connection should be disqualifying for DeepGreen; taken together, the filing paints a picture of irresponsible actors trying to circumvent important oversight. The SEC must examine this deal closely, ensure all required disclosures have been made, and take appropriate enforcement action if material information has been improperly withheld," said CfA Executive Director Michelle Kuppersmith.
+ The letter was covered by E&E News ([link removed]) .
* CfA Requests FEC Investigation into NRA and Affiliates for Federal Election Law Violations: On Tuesday, CfA filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission requesting that it investigate if the National Rifle Association violated federal election laws during the 2018 and 2020 elections by continuing to maintain financial relationships with foreign entities. (Press Release ([link removed]) , Complaint ([link removed]) )
+ “The NRA has continued to violate campaign finance law by brazenly soliciting foreign contributions in the last three federal election cycles. By failing to enforce the law, the FEC is setting a dangerous precedent, leaving our elections vulnerable to foreign entities eager to influence American politics,” said CfA Executive Director Michelle Kuppersmith.
* "Biden had it right the first time. Facebook is killing people:" In an opinion piece in The Mercury News, Tech Transparency Project (TTP) Director Katie Paul outlines how Facebook's failure to moderate dangerous content on its platform, such as vaccine disinformation and threats of political violence, has been causing people to lose their lives. (Article ([link removed]) )
+ "After Biden’s clear call for Facebook to deal with the consequences of its business model, Congress should take up the baton. Whether it's fomenting violence, fostering genocide or facilitating trafficking, Facebook’s lawless platform has contributed to countless deaths around the globe, even before the COVID-19 epidemic. Unless the administration and Congress step up to regulate Facebook, they will continue to do so for years to come."

** What We're Reading:
------------------------------------------------------------
* Garland restricting DOJ contact with White House officials: "U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland on Wednesday issued new guidelines on communication between the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the White House, limiting the types of situations in which DOJ officials will speak to those in the administration." (The Hill ([link removed]) , July 22)
* The FTC Votes Unanimously to Enforce Right to Repair: "During an open commission meeting Wednesday, the Federal Trade Commission voted unanimously to enforce laws around the Right to Repair, thereby ensuring that US consumers will be able to repair their own electronic and automotive devices. The FTC’s endorsement of the rules is not a surprise outcome; the issue of Right to Repair has been a remarkably bipartisan one, and the FTC itself issued a lengthy report in May that blasted manufacturers for restricting repairs. But the 5 to 0 vote signals the commission’s commitment to enforce both federal antitrust laws and a key law around consumer warranties—the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act—when it comes to personal device repairs." (Wired ([link removed]) , July 21)
* Klobuchar targets vaccine misinformation with Section 230 bill: "Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) introduced legislation Thursday to fight bogus medical claims online during health crises like the coronavirus pandemic. Her target: Section 230. Klobuchar's bill would carve out an exception to Section 230, the 1996 law that protects internet platforms from liability for content that users post, for health misinformation proliferating during public health emergencies — like the misinformation that has been running rampant about vaccines for Covid-19." (Politico ([link removed]) , July 22)
