New York City has never had a person of South Asian descent on the City Council. It has also never had an openly gay Black woman councilmember or a Muslim woman councilmember. But more than two weeks after the city’s primary elections, it's looking like the next City Council will change that, becoming the most diverse in the city’s history—a clear indicator that our movement to change the face of leadership is growing and making a difference. New York City, and our country as a whole, is made stronger when its leaders look more like America. That’s a fact.

Voting shouldn’t be hard to do—but states across the country are actively trying to make it so. According to a new Brennan Center analysis, 18 states have enacted 30 new laws in 2021 that restrict access to voting. These laws make voting by mail and early voting more difficult, impose harsher voter ID requirements, and make faulty voter purges more likely, among other things. Let this be a new, urgent reminder that we must elect leaders who will protect our vote and expand access to the ballot box, instead of ones that do the opposite.

A pathway to citizenship has been added to the Senate’s budget proposal! This is a BIG first step to winning citizenship for millions!
