Hi John --
So often, Asian American kids are deprived of their own history. They don't learn about the Chinese Exclusion Act, the internment of Japanese Americans, or solidarity between Asian Americans and other marginalized groups.
But in at least one state, that's changing. A new Illinois law is now requiring the teaching of AAPI history in public schools.
Illinois Rep. Jennifer Gong-Gershowitz didn't know much about her Chinese-American roots until law school. She's proud that now “the next generation of Asian American students won't need to travel across the county or attend law school to learn something about their heritage.”
This legislation has never been more necessary. In March, six Asian American women were murdered in Atlanta. That atrocity followed a terrible twelve months in which hate crimes against AAPI people in the U.S. rose astronomically.
We need to fight this xenophobia and hatred from every corner. And we need to know if we have your support. So, John, let us know:
Do you support teaching Asian American history in public schools?
Thank you for standing with us.
