John,
The House of Representatives just announced their budget for 2022, and we have really exciting news:
This budget includes over $220 MILLION for community-based gun violence prevention and intervention programs!
CJAF has spent the past six months in talks with both the Biden White House and key Congressional offices to advocate for this critical funding. And we did it!
The House of Representatives will soon vote on this budget -- and we need it to pass. Please tweet at Speaker Pelosi and Senator Schumer today urging Congress to support and pass the Fiscal Year 2022 Budget Bill: [[link removed]]
TWEET NOW » [[link removed]]T here are two key line items in this budget proposal that will have a significant impact on our mission:
First, Congress is allocating $100 million purely for community-based violence intervention initiatives through the Department of Health and Human Services. And second, they’ve allocated an additional $110 million that will include funding for youth mentoring program grants through the Department of Justice.
This funding is so important because it recognizes that gun violence is a systemic public health issue that requires systemic solutions. And by making real and meaningful investments in community-based solutions to end gun violence, we can educate and empower those most impacted by this crisis.
The budget announcement is a huge win for this organization because it was a key part of our recommendations to the Biden White House since taking office in January.
And our work didn’t stop there. In order to ensure this made it into the official Congressional budget, we also partnered with multiple Congressional members to build support internally, including Senators Tammy Duckworth (D, IL), Klobuchar (D, MN)), as well as Reps. Lucy McBath (D, GA-6), Mike Thompson (D, CA-5), Robin Kelly (D, IL-2) and many others.
And after months of advocating, we’re so excited to see our hard work pay off. Now we need to make sure this budget gets passed.
