Friend,

Yesterday, House GOP leader Kevin McCarthy withdrew all of his picks from the select committee tasked with investigating the January 6 insurrection. He accused House Democrats and Speaker Pelosi of playing partisan politics with the committee, claiming that it would destroy the institution of the House.

Here's the truth: Democrats wanted a bipartisan commission, evenly divided between the parties, to investigate the attack on our Capitol. But the vast majority of House Republicans opposed this, and Senate Republicans filibustered it. A select committee (which Republicans still could participate in) ended up being our only option.

Republicans had multiple chances to ensure they'd have a voice in this process. At every turn, they showed they were more concerned with pleasing Donald Trump's base and deflecting blame for what happened than getting any semblance of the truth.

There is no unity without accountability, and there is no reconciliation without recognizing and acknowledging destructive lies that were encouraged and amplified for far too long. We have to investigate the root causes of the January 6 insurrection, understand how misinformation was amplified, and determine who knew what and when. These steps are fundamental to protecting the sanctity and future of our democracy, and ensuring they happen matters far more than appeasing bad-faith actors.

I am hopeful that the remaining members of the select committee will be able to provide the American people with critical answers. As the representative for tens of thousands of federal workers, I know the impact that January 6 had on so many, and I will do all I can to support the search for the truth behind that day.

Sincerely,

Jennifer
