To me, the Santa Cruz World Surfing Reserve means community.

After all, we need more than surfers to protect waves: it takes scientists to look after the ocean, engineers to work with the eroding cliffs, and locals alike to help preserve our coastlines.

Born and raised in Santa Cruz, I’ve been able to grow my career as a professional surfer. Thanks to this town, I’ve had the opportunity to follow my passion competing around the world. Now, I get to combine my love of surfing with my environmental background to work at Save The Waves and help protect the place I love. 

For centuries, Santa Cruz has been a popular spot for adventure seekers and beach bums through its serene mountain-to-beach environments - creating the ultimate surf ecosystem.

Today, the Santa Cruz World Surfing Reserve provides the framework we need to maintain our community's backyard for years to come.

For a second year in a row, Cowells Beach in Santa Cruz was not included on Heal The Bay's 'Beach Bummer' list. 

Improved water quality at the famed Santa Cruz beach and surf break follows years of combined efforts and management practices. Many thanks to the contributors of the Cowell's Working Group for their dedication, including the City of Santa Cruz, Surfrider Santa Cruz and the Sierra Club.

We celebrated the life and legacy of Jack O’Neill on July 9th with the O’Neill crew for a beach day event at Pleasure Point, Santa Cruz. 

With the help of Artist Ambassador Ethan Estess, we officially unveiled “The Plastic Wave” - a seven foot wave sculpture created out of 1,000 intercepted plastic phone cases made with our partners at Pela Case.

On Sunday, July 18th, Save The Waves hosted a beach cleanup at Cowells Beach with Kona Brewing, surfer Anna Gudauskas and surf photographer Sarah Lee for their #CatchACleanWave tour.

A total of 72 pounds were collected, sorted and removed. Many thanks to the local community for your help!
