I’m writing to share an update on Kirsten’s efforts to reform the military justice system.

Late last night, Kirsten’s full Military Justice Improvement and Increasing Prevention Act—the most historic reform of the military justice system in a generation—passed the Senate Armed Services Committee in the mark-up of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), the annual defense spending bill.

The Military Justice Improvement and Increasing Prevention Act will move the prosecution of sexual assault and serious crimes from the chain of command to trained, independent military prosecutors.

This fight isn’t over yet, but this a huge step forward for our service members, survivors, their families, and all those who have fought tirelessly for this legislation for nearly a decade.

It is also a reminder that the toughest fights are always worth taking on, even when they seem impossible. When Kirsten introduced the Military Justice Improvement Act in 2013, she had 39 Senate co-sponsors. Today, the bill has 66—a filibuster-proof majority.

Today, we are closer than ever to ensuring justice for all. But Kirsten won’t rest until this legislation is on President Biden’s desk and signed into law.
