John,
We’ve been keeping you updated on Donald Trump’s buzzer-beating decision to remove the gray wolf from the endangered species list — and unfortunately, we have some frustrating news.
We told you last March that this decision opened the door to a hunting season on gray wolves that far exceeded the kill quota allowed under the hunt.
Now we’ve learned through research from the University of Wisconsin that since being stripped of federal protections by former President Trump, a third of Wisconsin's total wolf population have been killed.

“We took the most conservative estimates of poaching and cryptic poaching,” the study co-author Adrian Treves said.
Gray wolves are a vital part of the ecosystem. They keep grazing animals in check, which helps protect naturally growing trees and plants. But they currently only occupy 20% of their historic range — that’s why removing their protections made absolutely no sense.
Not only did stripping their “endangered” status mean a hunt was allowed to be held, but data strongly indicates that rolling back protections and green lighting legal hunting can also increase illegal hunting.
We’ve had enough of short-sighted decisions when it comes to conversation and protection of endangered wildlife. Without protection, gray wolves could go the way of the Red Wolves in the eastern United States, where only an estimated 20 wolves still roam.
