Here in San Diego, our convention center was utilized as an emergency intake facility for unaccompanied migrant minors.
When President Biden asked for compassion for the children crossing the border alone, San Diegans heeded his call and offered a space full of compassion and understanding, without the cruelty of the Trump administration’s choices.
Now, we’ve successfully connected over 2,400 children with family members in the U.S. and can celebrate the closure of this facility.
The inhumane practices of the Trump Administration got us here, and while we’re grateful for the placement of these children, it is time we end the legacy of Trump’s immigration policies.

It’s critical that we treat migrant children with compassion and kindness — not the demonization practiced by the Trump Administration. I’m filled with pride when I see so many of these children reconnected with family members or sponsors here in the United States.
But there are more children and more families in need, stuck in detention centers, and eager to make a better life for themselves in our country.
