Hi John,

Last week, a Texas district court judge ruled the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program was unlawful. The court decision is a major setback but this fight is far from over.

The National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC) remains committed to supporting young immigrants impacted by this decision and we're glad to have you with us. Together, we will continue fighting for a path to citizenship for undocumented young people, people with Temporary Protected Status (TPS), farm workers, essential workers, and millions of undocumented people in our communities.

NIJC Executive Director Mary Meg McCarthy said, “Anything short of a permanent path to citizenship is unacceptable at this juncture. … Legalization has the support it needs to pass reconciliation. After today’s court ruling, there should be no delay in getting it done." Read Mary Meg's full statement about the DACA decision.

Here is a quick summary of the decision:

1. Judge Hanen found the DACA program to be unlawful, but DACA renewals may continue for now.

2. The government can continue accepting new, first-time DACA applications but cannot process them.

Visit NIJC's DACA Info Center to learn more about what this decision means and get other resources for DACA recipients and immigrant youth.

Check out our DACA FAQs with answers to some of the most common questions we get.

Watch the Facebook Live community info session I did yesterday with our friends at the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights. We gave updates on the DACA program, how DACA recipients can proceed, and what you can do to take action.

Register for an upcoming DACA renewal clinic if you're eligible to renew DACA. NIJC is continuing to do our free DACA renewal legal clinics to connect young immigrants with volunteer lawyers to renew their DACA. With this recent court decision, we recommend that people who are eligible renew their DACA as soon as possible.

We'll continue to keep you updated about what's happening with DACA and how you can support a path to citizenship for undocumented people in our communities.

Thank you,

Vanessa Esparza-López
Managing Attorney of NIJC's Immigrant Legal Defense Project
