John,

People have been asking me about whether Senate Democrats can pass an amnesty with only 51 votes (50 Senators plus one Vice-President tie-breaker). The uncomfortable fact is that you can never say what people in government can't do when they want to do it badly enough.

Amnesty backers in Congress are certainly trying. They realize that a big amnesty is unlikely to get the 60 votes in the Senate usually necessary to pass a bill. So, they're trying to pass it off as a financial measure to skirt Senate rules by using an exemption made for budget bills.

Here's how Washington-based newspaper Politico describes the situation:

"The tactic which just months ago seemed like a long shot even to liberals is now widely seen as President Joe Biden's best shot at confronting one of Washington's policy leviathans and delivering on a decades-long party promise....

"So far, the idea is attracting little resistance from Democrats, even with their threadbare margins in both chambers. House Democrats, which have struggled on broader immigration bills, have already unanimously backed a pathway to citizenship for those Dreamers, farmworkers and immigrants previously granted Temporary Protected Status, known as TPS."

--Politico, July 15th

See, John, Democratic leaders know that their immigration agenda is unpopular with Republicans, most independents, and a surprising number of moderate Democrats. Since it's unpopular, backers are trying to jam it through with as little debate and media coverage as possible. To stop the immigration juggernaut, it must be clear that Congress knows how much American voters oppose it.

That's where you come in, John. We can't wait until the Democrats' leaders have already decided that they can get away with passing an amnesty, and it's coming to the floor of the Senate soon. We need your financial support today.

Please, John, don't misunderstand me: I'm not asking for money now in case we need it in the future. We need it now because decision will happen in two or three weeks!

These deals are taking place now. The folks in Washington aren't about to make the same mistakes they made 15 years ago, when we blindsided them with opposition as they were preparing to import or legalize 30 million or more foreign workers. !

Congressional leaders DO NOT WANT to introduce a bill only to find out they don't have the votes to pass it. They're assessing whether they have the votes NOW! Moderates and swing-state Senators certainly don't want to go on record opposing the will of their voters for nothing! Our best hope is for our supporters to convince them not to include an amnesty in the first place.

For that to happen, we need to provide our supporters with timely, accurate, well-researched information. We need to provide simple, effective ways to communicate with their legislators. And we need to reach out to citizens beyond our membership to help them make critical phone calls. Our members like you, John, need confidence that there's an effective way to make their voices heard.

Last week we began pouring toll-free calls and messages onto Capitol Hill. This week we're doing even more. (Have you done your actions today? If not, go to your customized Action Board now!)

Most of all, we need you to hit that red button and donate to NumbersUSA Action. We need more support from more of you to beat this amnesty attempt. Please give what you can today.
