Yesterday, I had the honor of talking virtually to the Texas House legislators who have made national news by leaving their home state to derail passage of harsh legislation that would impose cruel new barriers to voting and would criminalize steps to make voting more accessible. They are right to fight back.

I was proud to be among a handful of Secretaries of State who gave them encouragement and shared best practices about making democracy real for voters - even under hard conditions.

The Texas legislators know that in the short-term only federal action can save them. They came to Washington, D.C. to press for passage of the For the People Act. Join me and the Texas legislators in urging the Senate to pass the For the People Act. Add your name →

I told them I appreciated their hard work, their courage, and their sacrifice - and that history would judge them kindly.

I told them that despite their struggle there is cause for optimism. Voting rights need not be a partisan issue, and Minnesota as a state where strong election laws are mostly the product of cooperation.

It’s time for the Senate to act. My hope is that enough members of the U.S. Senate come to understand the need for minimum national standards that would prevent states like Texas from attacking voting rights. If you agree, please add your name now →
