Folks, we face a plastic waste crisis. Right now, there are not any national standards for plastic waste recycling. As a result, only 9% of plastic gets recycled.

When I was just dreaming (and working really hard) to come to Congress I knew once I got here it would be essential to act on our plastic waste crisis. And I did not wait a second before getting to work. As the cofounder of the House Plastics Solutions Task Force, I’ve brought partners together from throughout the country to come together to hone in on new technologies and supply chain opportunities – exactly what we are known for in Michigan.

It’s also what led me to drafting and introducing the Plastic Waste Reduction Act. And I’m pretty excited about this bill because I think it has a good chance of passing Congress. And if it does – it will help solve our plastic waste problem.
