Hi John,
[Note: Summer is a slow time for fundraising, and I’m behind on July’s fundraising goal. I need your help to keep building a strong campaign. Can you contribute just $1 now to help me catch up? Thank you.]
One of the many unfortunate results of Citizens United and unlimited money in U.S. politics is that candidates have to raise vast sums of money to be competitive in elections.
That means “dialing for dollars,” AKA cold calling people and asking for money.
In fact, that’s what I’m doing right now as I write this email — while the phone rings, I write.
Can you give just $1 now, so I can spend less time on the phones and more time in the community?
While corporate politicians spend their call time calling billionaires and oil executives, I reject all corporate money and spend my time calling the grassroots. Every donation adds up: $7, $27, $50, but it takes a lot of time on the phones.
Only a small percentage of people pick up the phones. And a small percentage of those are able to talk. It’s time consuming, but it works.
A much, much higher percentage of people I’m sending this email to (you!) will read this email. So if you’ve read this far, thank you! Can you give just $1 now to boost my fundraising?
