Newsletter of the Goethe-Institut Washington

Dear Friends,

As July draws to a close, many members of our team will be out of the office and enjoying their summer holidays. This will be our last newsletter before we resume biweekly newsletters again on August 26.

If you're looking for some great reads during your downtime, check out the fall schedule for our Goethe Book Club! We'll resume on September 21 with a virtual discussion of Gabriele Tergit's 1931 novel Käsebier Takes Berlin (Käsebier erobert den Kurfürstendamm), translated into English by Sophie Duvernoy and published in 2019.

We are also excited to announce that this fall, we will be hosting a few in-person and hybrid events at our space in The Liz! On September 10 and 14, the DC Shorts International Film Festival will present several workshops and screenings for filmmakers and film-lovers; further details and ticketing information will be announced when we return at the end of August. In the meantime, mark your calendars and stay tuned for more updates to come.

We wish you a restful and enjoyable summer, and look forward to seeing you again in the fall!

Goethe Book Club: Fall 2021

Looking for some great summer reads? Check out the Goethe Book Club's selections for Fall 2021. In September, we'll kick things off with Gabriele Tergit's Weimar-Era farce Käsebier Takes Berlin. In October, we'll discuss Wolfgang Hilbig's The Tidings of the Trees, translated to English in 2018 by Isabel Fargo Cole - who will join us in this November in Washington for Zeitgeist Literature Showcase. Lastly, in December, we'll read the brand-new translation of Robert Seethaler's The Field.

Water

The mystical element that everyone likes but only appreciates when it’s missing. Stories about water can be fun, funny, tragic, or informative — and so our street art blog series about the liquid element has become just as diverse — with contributions from Canada, Germany, Mexico, and the USA.
