John--Friend--We are grateful for the incredible response we've received from this email. If you haven't already, I hope you have a moment to read it and chip in whatever you can afford.--Robert Reich
Dear John,
Last week, in a leaked video, Republican Congressman Chip Roy was caught admitting the truth: that Republicans don’t want to pass infrastructure legislation or anything else.
“Eighteen more months of chaos and the inability to get stuff done. That's what we want.”
Nothing to boost clean energy or repair our crumbling roads and bridges. Nothing to address the rising cost of college tuition or to lower the cost of health care. Nothing to help the American people at all. Their political strategy is to make the American people so cynical that they give up all hope in the idea that the government can solve problems or make people's lives better.
And their strategy is, in part, working. Over the last 30 years, faith in the government, democracy, the news media, and the other major civic institutions of our society has cratered.
Most troubling to me as an educator are the young people I see who arrive as a first-year students on campus already becoming jaded. When even young people give up hope for a better world, we’re doomed.
So today I’m making a special request.
I’m not asking you to donate to help win an election or pass a bill through Congress. I’m asking you to chip in to help fight for hope and push back against cynicism.
Will you stand with me against the rising tide of cynicism and make a donation today to Inequality Media? Every dollar counts.
The team here at Inequality Media is producing viral-video content every day to push against this toxic stew of cynicism and hopelessness.
We’re doing that by telling stories of victories, not just outrage, and by lifting up the voices of everyday people who are battling injustice and making concrete change.
We’re doing that by clearly explaining all the ways the government is already making a difference in our lives and the common-sense solutions that could be put in place tomorrow if only our elected officials took action.
We’re using our massive social media following to spread the word about all the ways, large and small, that our work is making a difference, including to help boost people’s moral and emotional fortitude.
We need you, and others like you, to be fired up.
Republicans want us all to become like them: Jaded. Selfish. Cynical. We cannot allow that to happen.
We can rebuild our economy. We can end systemic racism. We can reverse climate change. We must and we will.
Please chip in whatever you can to help support this critical work.
Thanks for all you do,
Robert Reich
