5 Fun Facts About the American Flag Did you know ... There have been 27 VERSIONS of the American flag. The colors are symbolic: White signifies purity and innocence, red stands for hardiness and valor, and blue signifies vigilance, perseverance and justice. Though BETSY ROSS is commonly believed to have made the first American flag, there is no official documentation to confirm the true origin of the first flag. The nickname 'OLD GLORY' came from a flag owned by a 19th-century American sea captain named William Driver. SIX AMERICAN FLAGS have been planted on the moon.
