Just last week, I joined statewide community partners for the launch of the Providence Guaranteed Income pilot program. This program is entirely philanthropically funded and comes after nearly a year of research, community engagement and learning best practices from cities throughout the country. The program will provide 110 Providence residents living at or under 200% of the federal poverty level the opportunity to receive $500 a month for 12 months.

 

The global pandemic exposed the inequities in our social safety net and exacerbated the disparities of health and wealth for working families across the country. Going back to normal is not an option; we need new bold, innovative approaches for our residents. The best way to invest in the long-term health and wellbeing of our communities is by providing direct financial assistance to our residents. This pilot program will have immediate benefit to participating families and will encourage further policies aimed at reducing poverty at the municipal, state and federal level.

 

As the son of immigrants who grew up on the West End of Providence, I vividly remember dealing with the burden and weight of financial challenges throughout my childhood. My mom Aurora-- who is my hero-- would work around the clock day after day, shift after shift. So many of the decisions my family made over time were driven by what made the most sense financially.  I know this program would have alleviated some of the financial strain for us, just as it will for Providence families today. 

 

Advocating for all families and serving our community is truly an honor and I know that by leading with bold ideas such as our Guaranteed Income Program, we are effectively making a difference. That is why I am asking for your continued support in keeping our campaign infrastructure active here in Providence. You’ve always had my back as I have had yours. Anything you can do is greatly appreciated.
