How we're confronting the biodiversity crisis and how you can help

Dear Friend,
All creatures have a right to exist and flourish on this planet. And we are all connected through the web of life — reliant on other species for the survival of our own.
However, nature as we know it is in peril. Scientists estimate that since the 1970s, we have lost between 50% to 68% of all plant and animal life on this planet. If we continue at our unsustainable pace of destroying habitat and over-exploiting wildlife, they predict one million species could go extinct by the end of this century.
Earthjustice has long fought for endangered wildlife, but it has become clear the biodiversity crisis demands even greater attention. To this end, Earthjustice has launched our Biodiversity Defense Program, a new initiative laser-focused on using the power of the law to address the major drivers of the biodiversity crisis.
Earthjustice’s attorneys are doubling down on our defense of biodiversity, but we can’t make the progress we need without your help. The Biden administration is about to start the first of what will likely be several official rulemakings to reverse the last administration’s rollbacks of the Endangered Species Act, one of the most effective tools we have for protecting wildlife and its habitat. Each rulemaking will have an official public comment period, where we’ll need to make it clear to the administration that we need the Endangered Species Act restored to its full power as quickly as possible.
We're still waiting on the administration to open the first comment period, but we wanted to give you a heads up that it's coming — and ask for your patience and continued engagement as we rally for multiple comment periods this year. Only with increased engagement can we hold the administration accountable to its ambitious promises to confront this crisis of nature.
There are two things you can do right now to help: learn about the drivers of the biodiversity crisis, and take action to combat an extinction crisis that’s happening in real time — the die-off of Snake River salmon. Solutions are on the table to prevent this extinction, we just need our leaders to hear from you about them.
Sincerely,
Addie Haughey
Legislative Director, Lands, Wildlife, and Oceans
