#1 State for Business
For the second year in a row, Virginia has been named the top state for business by CNBC! The historic investments we've made in education and workforce development, as well as the strides we've made in diversity, equity, and inclusion propelled us to the top spot. I'm proud of everything we've done to make this state the best state to do business in, and I look forward to improving even further in areas like infrastructure and health care in order to see our score go even higher next year.
Broadband Expansion
Last week, Governor Northam announced a plan to use $700 million from American Rescue Plan Act funds to expand broadband access to every household in the Commonwealth. This investment will be a game changer in terms of closing the digital divide here in the Commonwealth, and will benefit many residents in the 13th District who still struggle to get reliable broadband in more rural areas. This spending will need to be approved next month by the General Assembly when we go into Special Session, and I will be enthusiastically supporting this funding.
Delta Variant
Now, more than ever, it is crucial that all of us do our part to get vaccinated. The Delta variant of COVID-19 has been causing a surge in COVID cases here in the Commonwealth -- it is more infectious, and potentially more harmful and deadly, than previous strains of the virus. The Virginia Department of Health states that unvaccinated people have made up over 99% of the Commonwealth's illnesses, hospitalizations, and deaths this year. While breakthrough cases in fully vaccinated people are possible, especially with the Delta variant, hospitalization and death in vaccinated individuals are rare. The best thing you can do for your health, your family, and your community is to get vaccinated if you aren't already.
The good news: it has never been easier to get vaccinated. You can visit vaccinate.virginia.gov or call 1-877-VAX-IN-VA for a list of vaccination clinics near you.
