Donald Trump's ex-aides are trying to launch a social media platform, where people can spout all the hate speech and downright lies they like. But the platform, “Gettr,” has had an inauspicious start.

We all remember when Twitter and Facebook finally said “Enough,” and shut Trump down in a big win for democracy. But now. Gettr's founders are aiming for the banned-from-social-media customer base, claiming their platform will steer clear of “censorship” and “cancel culture.”

It's clear what that means: Gettr is for neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and conspiracy theorists.

The problem is, Trump's fans are so toxic that even Gettr can't cope. Users have spammed the platform with ban-worthy content -- honestly, we'd tell you more, but you don't want to know. And there's not much the Gettr staff can do, since they've invited the internet's worst provocateurs with open arms.

Meanwhile, the Twitter-copycat platform is such a mess that it got hacked within minutes of its launch. The promise of a tech haven for right-wing extremists just isn't holding up.

The lesson here is clear. Deplatforming extremists works.

We know what we have to do: Keep the pressure on big tech, and make it clear that we aren't ok with anti-vaxxers, racists, and bigots using social media as their personal PR outlets.
