John -

Right now, we're in the fight of our lives for our homes, our communities, and our families. We're facing a climate crisis — and we need to pass bold, progressive legislation that meets the scale of our problems now.

That is why I am excited to share with you my latest piece of legislation that I believe will help us to address the climate crisis by transforming our schools and education system: the Green New Deal for Public Schools.

In a bit, I'm going to go into further detail around what this bill entails — but before I do, will you join me in showing your support for this legislation and add your name to the bill as a citizen co-sponsor?

In short, the Green New Deal for Public Schools will invest $1.43 trillion over ten years in America's K-12 education system to heal and strengthen our schools for the 21st century. The bill places our young people at the center of our national response to the crises of climate change, systemic racism, and economic inequality.

If passed into law, the bill will create an Office of Sustainable Schools within the U.S. Department of Education to administer new grant programs in collaboration with the Department of Energy. From there, schools and districts can take advantage of resources, including:

-Upgrades to every public school building in the country — starting with the highest-need districts — to create safe, healthy, zero-carbon, and accessible learning environments for students and staff.
-Drastically reducing student-to-staff ratios, equipping schools to approach target ratios of 12:1 for grades K-8 and 15:1 for grades 9-12.
-Strengthening and diversifying the educator pipeline.
-Better integration of local knowledge and community relationships in high-need schools.
-Address historic school funding inequities.

What's more is that the Green New Deal for Public Schools will fund 1.3 million jobs a year and eliminate 78 million metric tons of carbon dioxide annually — the equivalent of taking 17 million cars off the road.

Now is the time for us to act boldly for our future. It's simple: we've got to deliver and get this done for our communities. Passing a Green New Deal for Public Schools will help us get there, and today, I'm asking you for your support as the bill gets introduced in the House. Will you add your name?

Peace and love,

Rep. Jamaal Bowman (NY-16)
