Dear John,
In a matter of months, Congress must take action to avoid a government default on our financial obligations and prevent any disruption in sending out Social Security benefit checks. If Congress fails to act in time to either raise or suspend the debt limit, benefit checks could be delayed for weeks, possibly longer — until this issue is resolved by Congress.
And at a time when millions of older Americans rely on their Social Security benefits just to make ends meet each month, any delay in receiving their earned benefits would be disastrous!
As you may recall, in the past, fiscal deadlines like this have been used by fiscal hawks in Congress as an opportunity to hold our nation’s economic future hostage and force deep cuts to the programs that millions of Americans have paid into and earned during their lifetime.
Yet, it’s the very policies supported by Senate Minority Mitch McConnell — including unpaid for tax breaks for the wealthy and huge corporations — which have helped cause deficits to soar. Ignoring facts, Senator McConnell continues to push the false claim that spending on Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid are to blame for the federal budget deficit.
The truth is simply this: Tax breaks, including write-offs for billionaires, millionaires and large corporations, account for the largest part of the federal budget. More than Social Security — and far more than Medicare and Medicaid combined.
And so, as we fight yet another self-imposed fiscal deadline brought on by some lawmakers’ prioritization of massive tax breaks for the wealthy over preserving earned benefits, help us remind our elected officials that it is their obligation to uphold our government’s commitment to Social Security! With so much at stake, please support our urgent fight to prevent Social Security beneficiaries from having to endure painful interruptions to their earned benefits with one urgent gift today.
Sincerely,
|
