Conspiracy theorists are working overtime in the Republican Party.

Yesterday, in a Senate hearing with Dr. Anthony Fauci, Senator Rand Paul used his time to double down on dangerous conspiracy theories claiming Dr. Fauci is complicit in covering up the genesis of the coronavirus and accusing him of lying to the American people.

Fauci called Rand Paul’s lies out for what they were, but the damage was done: more prime time airtime for QAnon conspiracies and science scepticism. From Rand Paul to Marjorie Taylor Greene, the party of Lincoln has become the party of anti-science quackery — with dangerous implications for our country.

The target of these debunked conspiracy theories is clear: to help Donald Trump rewrite history ahead of the 2024 election and create a scapegoat for his historic mishandling of the health crisis that led to the loss of over 600,000 American lives.

We need to counter their lies with science and lead with the facts. But it will take a powerful and disciplined grassroots movement to keep our democracy out of the hands of these conspiracy theorists.
