John, we need your help to end the COVID disinformation crisis.
Can you add your name to the letter we’re sending to Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey?
Twitter urgently needs to add a function for users to report COVID-19 mis- and disinformation to keep all of us safe from dangerous lies about the pandemic.
John,
I’m writing to you because we currently face a massive COVID disinformation crisis in our country, especially on social media networks like Twitter.
This crisis is literally killing us. Right-wing Twitter accounts are currently spreading COVID-19 disinformation that targets women and girls — especially Indigenous and People of Color. As a result, a recent study found that only 51% of women said they were somewhat or very likely to take the COVID vaccine.
Getting as many people as possible in our country vaccinated — and equipping them with the knowledge and information they need to feel confident in doing so — is one of the biggest hurdles facing our nation to overcome the pandemic. Especially for women as they make decisions for their families and communities.
Here’s the challenge: Right now, Twitter doesn’t have a method to report tweets or accounts that spread lies about the pandemic or the vaccine.
This isn’t because Twitter is overlooking this crisis — in fact they’re profiting from deadly disinformation. Anti-vaxxers on Twitter earn about $7.6 million in annual revenue and disinformation brings in millions more for platforms. For too long, Twitter has been profiting off the COVID crisis and it’s time someone calls them out.
So here’s how we’re fighting back: We’re joining other women-led organizations to collect as many signatures as we can to sign our letter calling on CEO Jack Dorsey to add a function on Twitter for users to report COVID-19 mis- and disinformation.

According to Twitter’s guidelines and policies, “content that is demonstrably false or misleading and may lead to significant risk of harm... may not be shared on Twitter.” But currently there is no way to report disinformation or lies about COVID on the platform.
By making it an option to report COVID-specific disinformation and lies, users will be able to work in collaboration with Twitter content moderators to identify lies about the pandemic and vaccine disinformation. By adding this simple function, Twitter can drastically reduce the amount of disinformation shown to women and girls.
Cracking down on COVID vaccine disinformation is especially important right now with hospitalizations rising in teenagers and kids. It’s urgent we take action now before more people are exposed to disinformation on Twitter.
In solidarity,
Noor Mir
