Friend, our media must do more to tackle false claims.

On BBC Radio 4's Today programme yesterday, the former Supreme Court judge Lord Sumption was seriously wrong when talking about Covid death figures.

We published our fact check on his claims on the same day. We’re pleased that the Today programme aired a correction to Lord Sumption's false claims this morning.

As independent fact checkers, we rely on our supporters to make this work happen.

The BBC were right to air a correction. But their listeners deserved better yesterday.

These were not new claims, and they were known to be wrong. The show put them on air and was not prepared to challenge them.

At this stage of the pandemic, bad information can leave people at risk of serious harm.

That’s why we’ll continue to fact check the media and hold them accountable for spreading false information.

But there’s a lot to be done, and we need your help.

If you agree that accurate reporting matters, could you become a supporter today?

Lots of people giving a small amount makes a really big difference.

We're really grateful for all support you can give.
