Biden: Pass the PRO Act
"That's why I am calling on Congress to pass the PRO Act and send it to my desk, so we can support the right to unionize."
That of course was President Joe Biden, speaking to Congress back in April. The PRO Act has passed the House of Representatives and needs just three more co-sponsors in the U.S. Senate to get it to President Biden's desk. The labor movement is now focused on four senators, including Democrat Mark Warner of Virginia. This week, the labor movement and its allies across the country are conducting an unprecedented mobilization to win freedom in the workplace by passing the PRO Act, which would give workers--including those in the gig economy--a real right to organize and bargain for better lives and for a better future for our country.
On this week's labor calendar, there are four PRO Act events, starting at 8:30 this morning with a rally at Senator Warner's Tyson's Corner District Office, then at 2 there's an online event, Catholic Social Teaching and the PRO Act and at 7 tonight, another online event, Passing the PRO Act and Building the Next Union Generation, plus a visit to thank senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen tomorrow; see Calendar (above) for complete details.

PETITION: Support workers and democracy!
The Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act is the labor law reform we need to protect workers and unions. If the PRO Act passes in the Senate, President Biden will sign it into law. Pleasehttps://actionnetwork.org/forms/the-pro-act?source=direct_link&referrer=group-afl-cio&link_id=1&can_id=351d3d77ffa2402a0eb808119aa30f00&source=email-coalition-email&email_referrer=email_1234727&email_subject=petition-i-support-workers-and-democracy sign the petition to tell your senators that you support unions, working people and the PRO Act! Whether your senators support the PRO Act or not, help us keep up the pressure and make it clear to them that the PRO Act is a priority for working people. [link removed] Add your name today.

Anger and disappointment after City Council rejects Hero Pay Act

Unions and community allies reacted with disappointment and anger after the DC City Council on Tuesday rejected an amendment to reinstate the Heroes Pay Act. "It is completely outrageous that the Council refused to compensate essential workers after all that they have done for us," said Metro Washington Labor Council AFL-CIO president Dyana Forester. "The Council showed a profound disregard for the sacrifices these heroes have made. Essential workers have risked their lives to keep the rest of us safe." DC Jobs with Justice joined the unions in expressing their appreciation to Councilmembers Elissa Silverman, Brianne Nadeau and Janeese Lewis George for their support of the Heroes Pay Act, which would have provided Hero Pay to tens of thousands of essential workers.

NoVA candidate interviews scheduled
Candidate endorsement interviews in Northern Virginia will take place by Zoom on Thursday July 22nd, Friday July 23rd and Monday July 26th. "Union members of affiliated unions are all welcome to participate," says NoVA Labor president Virginia Diamond. If you would like to participate in the interviews, contact mailto:[email protected] [email protected] for the link.

Today's Labor Quote: Kirsten Gillibrand

"When workers can organize and unions are strong, working families can thrive. It's time to pass the PRO Act."
