Friend, one of the reasons I was proud to vote for the American Rescue Plan was its expansion of the child tax credit.
Monthly payments will begin going out next month. They will help millions of families better afford childcare and basic living necessities. In the wake of a devastating pandemic and accompanying economic recession, expanding the child tax credit for 2021 was an essential component for providing relief.
But we can and must do more going forward. Working families shouldn't be supported only in times of crisis -- we should be investing in an economy that lifts everyone up and allows children to get the education, attention, nutrition, and care that they need.
That's why I support making the child care tax credit permanent. Will you stand with me and add your name to urge Congress to act?
This is about fairness, opportunity, and humanity. Far too many parents have faced the impossible choice between caring for their children and working to support their family. That should not happen in the United States.
Expanding the child tax credit and making it permanent will be one of the most significant steps toward ending poverty that we've made since the programs of the Great Society. In total, nearly 40 million households will benefit from this policy.
There is clear popular support for making the child tax credit permanent. Let's continue to show that our cause has momentum -- and demonstrate the urgency of action.
