Since its inception, Wall Street and its allies in Congress have demonized Social Security―falsely calling it a “Ponzi scheme” and promising us that it will go bankrupt at any moment. 84 years of Social Security benefits delivered on time and in full have done nothing to quell this disinformation campaign.

What is Citizens United? In 2010, in a horrible 5-4 ruling, the Supreme Court decided that it is unconstitutional to restrict PACs from using independent expenditures to overtly advocate for or against a candidate through Election Day. This case, Citizens United v. FEC, paved the way for the rise of Super PACs which can raise and spend unlimited sums of money advocating for or against a candidate as long as they do not coordinate with that candidate’s campaign.

In short, Citizens United opened the floodgates for special interest groups to spend unlimited, undisclosed amounts of money in U.S. elections.

Instead of waiting around for the U.S. Supreme Court to reverse its controversial 2010 decision, we are going to solve the problem through the legislative branch. Together, we are going to amend the U.S. Constitution.

Legislation has already been introduced in the House and the Senate that would start the process. Now, we are going to turn up the pressure on members of Congress to make sure they do the right thing: Vote to return the power of our democracy to the people.

Here is what the amendment says, but they key point is: the power of our democracy would be returned to the people, regardless of their wealth.

Amending the Constitution is not something to take lightly―and we don’t! This is a matter of huge importance and we must make clear in our Constitution that it is okay to put limits on political donations. Without limits, the voices of the rich and powerful become ever more influential.

Central to keeping our democracy functioning is that idea that every voter―rich or poor―has an equal say in our elections―and by extension the laws and policies that we live by. We can’t let the wealthy and powerful step in and buy elections and corrupt our democracy.

If Wall Street had their way, they would rush to privatize Social Security and put every nickel of older Americans’ retirement savings in the hands of greedy Wall Street bankers.

We will never let that happen. That’s why we must overturn Citizens United!
