Friend-
With the recent Supreme Court decision further weakening the protections of the Voting Rights Act, the urgent need for federal action to protect our freedom to vote is greater than ever.
That’s why Fair Fight Action officially relaunched our Hot Call Summer campaign! We need to keep turning up the heat on Congress so they know that we need them to pass the For the People Act.
For the next few weeks, we’ll be reaching out every Tuesday to share the latest and most important messages for you to emphasize when calling your Senators, and we’ll be hosting weekly events with some very special guests to help make clear just what’s at stake.
Please join us Thursday, July 22 at 8pm ET with Earthgang and additional Special Guests — tune in on our Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube channels for our first event since we’ve re-launched Hot Call Summer!
This week, we’re focusing on removing barriers to the ballot box so that all eligible voters can make their voices heard. Below are some bits of information you can share when talking about the For The People Act.
What to Say To Your Senators
Our freedom to vote is on the line, and that’s why I’m asking you to do everything you can to make sure S1, the For The People Act passes. We need this legislation to head to the President’s desk without delay.
Want some more information? Feel free to share the following with your Senators:
It’s critical that you prioritize provisions to address barriers to the ballot box. Ensuring every eligible voter is able to cast their ballot means three things:
- Protecting and expanding vote by mail, including offering prepaid postage, requiring ballot drop boxes, and requiring states to track and confirm the receipt of ballots.
- Reducing long lines at the polls by extending early voting and expanding vote by mail
- Preventing polling location closures, especially in communities of color and rural communities

In 2020, more than 65 million Americans voted by mail, with only five states requiring an excuse to do so. Despite bipartisan support for mail voting, anti-voter lawmakers across the country are trying to erect barriers to vote by mail.
- That’s why no-excuse voting by mail is a minimum standard of access that must be available to all eligible voters.
- We need to be moving forward, not backward, by continuing to protect and expand mail-in voting so that all voters are able to cast their ballots without unnecessary barriers.
Long lines—whether the result of negligence or incompetence—are a pernicious component of voter suppression, and disproportionately force Black and brown voters to wait for hours, exposed to the elements, and at the expense of their time, income, health, and constitutional rights.
- In 2020, voters suffered and jeopardized their health, waiting in line to vote up to over an hour and a half in Kentucky, 3 hours in Wisconsin, 4 hours in Pennsylvania, 6 hours in Texas, 7 hours in Nevada and 11 hours in extreme weather in Georgia.
- These closures disproportionately harm Black and brown voters, who already face the greatest barriers to casting a ballot.
- When a voter has to travel long distances, miss work, secure childcare and transportation, or wait in line for hours, it’s clear our institutions have failed. No voter should be forced to choose between casting a ballot and affording to feed their family.
- In 2016, about half a million eligible voters did not vote because of polling place problems, including long lines. This is unacceptable. We need federal action to combat this by extending early voting and making vote by mail more accessible.
We’ll be back next week with more ways to turn up the heat! And please join us Thursday, July 22 at 8pm ET with Earthgang and additional Special Guests — tune in on our Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube channels!
Thank you for your support and activism,
