The Far Right is seeking to erode our democracy before you even cast your next ballot. They continue to propagate Trump’s Big Lie to justify passing racist laws that restrict the right to vote. They are preparing to further gerrymander congressional districts to rig the playing field for their candidates to win. And if they don’t win? Well, they’re passing laws to make it easier to challenge – or even ignore – the results!
Unless we continue to mobilize against this assault on our democracy, the Far Right could solidify their power for years or even decades to come – will of the People be damned.

We’re slipping behind our monthly budget to combat voter suppression and pass critical legislation like the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. We need another $8,055 in grassroots online donations from supporters in the next 48 hours to get back on track.
The Far Right’s full-frontal assault on our democracy extends from voter suppression, gerrymandering, and the embrace of big money in politics to their coverup of the January 6 insurrection and making mischief with the fundamentally undemocratic Electoral College.
As noted in a recent Washington Post column by Dana Milbank, Yale historian Timothy Snyder, who studies 20th century authoritarianism and predicted an event like the January 6 insurrection, warns that Republicans are “digging themselves ever deeper into becoming a party which only wins by keeping other people from voting, and that’s a downward spiral.”
“We’re looking almost certainly at an attempt in 2024 to take power without winning election,” [Snyder] told me Thursday. Recent moves in Republican-controlled state legislatures to suppress the votes of people of color and to give the legislatures control over casting electoral votes “are all working toward the scenario in 2024 where they lose by 10 million votes but they still appoint their guy.”

The extinguishing of our Reichstag fire on Jan. 6 made Trump’s failed coup less like 1933 Germany than 1923 Germany, when Hitler’s clownish Beer Hall Putsch failed. Historically, most coup attempts fail. “But a failed coup is practice for a successful coup,” Snyder said. This is what’s ominous about the Republicans’ determination to sabotage investigations that could help us learn from the Jan. 6 insurrection. Also ominous is the move in many Republican-controlled states to ban schools from teaching about systemic racism — “memory laws,” Snyder calls them — which “feeds into this authoritarian turn” by providing cover for the new attempts to disenfranchise more non-White voters. “They’re trying to ban the discussion of things like voter suppression, and it’s precisely the history of voter suppression which allows us to see it for what it is,” Snyder said.
And it’s not just 2024 that we have to worry about. The Far Right is aggressively pushing its voter suppression and gerrymandering agenda NOW so they can take control of Congress in next year’s midterm elections!

Trump may have lost the presidency, but those on the Far Right who support him are stopping at nothing to make sure they’ll never lose power again – even if they lose elections.
