John,
Earlier this summer, Rep. Cori Bush introduced the People’s Response Act, a bill that adopts a new approach to public safety that will save lives, and build systems of care that are rooted in improving the well-being of all communities.
Color Of Change has launched the Communities Keep Communities Safe series to support the passage of the People’s Response Act and talk to some of the groups redefining public safety in their own communities. Every Wednesday in July at 7PM EST/4PST, go to the Color Of Change Facebook page to hear from organizers who have developed, implemented and scaled alternatives to safety that are based in, and run by, community organizers.
Last week, we heard from Black gun violence prevention advocates who are transforming communities through community-led solutions. Tomorrow, hear from women who have been the vanguard of creating alternative models of community safety in a conversation moderated by Andrea James, the founder and Executive Director of the National Council for Currently and Formerly Incarcerated Women and Girls .
Any approach that centers punishment as a tool of public safety jeopardizes the health of whole communities and puts the people in those communities at extreme risk. RSVP now to learn more about how organizers have built holistic alternatives to public safety and how the People’s Response Act will grow these efforts.
