Friend,
An important election is two weeks from today: the primary for Detroit’s top election administrator.
As 2020’s presidential election showed, our majority-Black city plays a big role in the swing state of Michigan. Detroit continues to be singled out as a target for racist national and state-level attacks on our voting rights.
But instead of fighting against these attacks, our current City Clerk is now making it HARDER for us to vote.
Just weeks before this primary election, the incumbent outrageously chose to decrease the number of absentee ballot drop boxes available to voters. This is the exact type of voter suppression that community advocates have spent years fighting against. And it will make it harder to add drop boxes moving forward.
We need a City Clerk who will be a strong advocate fighting back against voter suppression and making voting more accessible. That’s why I’m proud to have endorsed Denzel McCampbell for Detroit City Clerk, pictured with me below:
Denzel spoke up to re-install our absentee drop boxes in order to make voting as easy as possible. If elected to the crucial position of City Clerk, he will not only fight for our voting rights, but also make sure to increase civic engagement among people who’ve been left out of the political process. That’s why we need him in this role.
With just two weeks left before the election, can you chip in to Denzel McCampbell’s grassroots campaign for City Clerk? We’ve got to protect Detroiters’ voting rights and bring marginalized people’s voices into our political decision-making process.
Our local newspaper the Detroit Free Press just endorsed Denzel for his “energy and innovation,” writing: "Detroiters looking to improve their city's administration of elections, fend off a determined effort to suppress minority participation and boost public confidence in the integrity of the electoral process should entrust that mission to DENZEL McCAMPBELL."1
I agree!
During the last decade, Denzel has been organizing and advocating across the state on issues that impact our daily lives. We’ve worked together to ensure our communities have the resources they need.
And as an elected Charter Revision Commissioner, Denzel has worked hand-in-hand with Detroiters to ensure that we have a city charter that is inclusive, forward-thinking, and centers the most vulnerable.
He’s been involved in numerous local social justice groups, including as a founding member of the Detroit chapter of BYP100—where he has fought against police brutality, hyper-surveillance, criminalization of our communities, and mass incarceration. Denzel is committed to fighting for issues rooted in uplifting community and returning power to the people.
These people-centered values are integrated into Denzel’s run for public office, too. That’s why he’s running a grassroots campaign focused on directly contacting potential voters through door-knocking and calling. And there’s a lot of work to be done in the next 14 days to ensure victory on Primary Election Day.
With absentee voting already underway and only 14 days until Detroiters hit the polls, Denzel needs our help reaching voters in the city. Can you donate now?
