Liz WillenDear reader,

Before the pandemic thrust a spotlight on terrible conditions in some public schools — think dead rats, empty soap dispensers, rodent droppings and faucets leaking brown water — parents in poor cities throughout the U.S. often waged unsuccessful battles for improvements. Now, in some parts of New Jersey, families are fighting to retain online learning options this fall amid concerns that classrooms are unsafe.

We’ll be following similar tales throughout the summer, as Covid-19 cases continue to rise, adding more uncertainty to what fall will look like. On the higher education front, there is one area where change is a long time coming: legacy admission, which advantages the wealthy and connected. We report on how Colorado became the first state to prohibit legacy admission in public universities. And at a time when many fraternities have been banned on campuses, we bring you the latest research on potential benefits of Greek life.

As always, we’re eager to hear your stories as well. Let us know what’s on your mind.
