Understanding Adolescent Mental Health Barriers & Solutions

what barriers lead to mental health struggles is extremely important so
that we see warning signs.

Research & Data
Chart of the Month
Demographers have a standard way of measuring teen births: as a rate per
1,000 teens aged 15-19. This helps to make apples to apples comparisons
across years and regions, but it doesn't answer the question of how likely
a teen is to become a parent before the age of 20.
Nearly 1 out of 5 teen births in Texas are a repeat birth, so one way to
estimate the overall likelihood of teen parenthood is to look back across
time and see what percent of teens gave birth to their first child each
year.
For the cohort of Texans who were born in the year 2000, we can estimate
that approximately 11% gave birth before the age of 20. Most of those were
18 or 19 when they had their first birth, but about 4% of Texas females
born in 2000 became parents at 17 or younger.
This is just an estimate, and it doesn’t perfectly account for things
like people moving in and out of Texas — but it gives us a good ballpark
idea. It’s also important to note that teen birth rates have been on a
big decline, so the cohort born in 2007 who are just now entering their
teenage years may have a lower overall likelihood of becoming teen parents.

Texas Foster Youth Health Initiative (TFYHI)
The work to update and co-create curriculums for youth in care, caregivers
and health providers is well underway. The caregiver curriculum _Brave
Conversations_ has moved into the testing phase and resource materials,
handouts, booklets and worksheets are also being refined and included in
the testing. TFYHI is meeting with the Foster Care Centers of Excellence to
share information about the initiative and garner feedback for the health
providers portion of the curriculum and program adaptations.
Based on the feedback of our young adult consultants, we are exploring
interactive ways to present sexual and reproductive health care content for
youth, such as a series of short videos and instructionals.
Collaborative for Youth in Care (CLYC)
As a response to the last minute changes to opt-in for sex-ed in Texas, we
will be adding the development of the iCHAMPSS tool and resources to
support implementation of the new sex-ed standards to our implementation
plan, with a focus on providing extra support for youth in care in Houston
and Foster liaisons.
CLYC partner, the Harris County Youth Collective (HCYC) is set to re-launch
as a Youth-Led Organizing Entity built upon the work of HCYC’s Youth and
Community Collaboration efforts, led by Dieter Cantu and the work of the
Youth and Community Specialists. The Collective Action for Youth launch
party will be held on July 24, 2021 at the Deluxe Theater in Houston,
Texas. Register below to join the celebration.

Texas Is Ready
The Texas Is Ready website has been updated, and we are excited to support
Texas schools and communities with implementation of the newly adopted
Health Education Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). These new
standards will bring sex education to middle school students across the
state, and notably, the new laws passed in the recent Legislative Session
make major changes to the sex ed adoption process and to School Health
Advisory Councils, or SHACs.
