My name is Mandela Barnes, and today I am proud to announce that I am running to be the next United States Senator from Wisconsin.
In a moment I’m going to tell you about what this campaign is all about, but first I'd like to ask you to do something important to show you're a part of this from day one:

For those who don’t know me, I grew up in one of our nation's most impoverished and incarcerated areas. It remains a community starved of resources, but brimming with joy, resilience, and hardworking, brilliant people.
My mom was a Milwaukee public school teacher for 30 years, my dad worked the 3rd shift at the General Motors plant, and both were active union members. Their example showed me the importance of working hard and fighting for opportunity for everyone.
I graduated from high school at 16. At 25 I was elected State Representative. And as I turned 32, I became Wisconsin’s first black Lieutenant Governor.
As the birthplace of the Labor Movement and the Progressive Movement, Wisconsin has a lot to be proud of. But many communities — especially black, brown, and indigenous — have also borne the brunt of systemic racism and the many crises we’ve endured. The truth is that we’ve got a lot of work to do to build a more just and equitable state for every Wisconsinite.
The current system isn't working for the people of Wisconsin. Hard work isn't paying off like it used to. People are working longer and longer for less and less while big corporations and CEOs bring in larger profits than ever before.
We can't settle for what is – we have to reach for what can be. Instead of changing our dreams...we need to change the game. It's time to stand for something. For opportunity. For everyone.
But it won’t be easy. We'll be taking on some very powerful special interests who will try to stop our campaign. And the only way to win is if we stand together.
That's why I'm asking you directly:
